Today I had a chance to listen and watch a webinar about landing a sustainability job, which just reconfirmed my personal findings while on a job hunt.
There are 5 things you need to know when looking for a sustainability job.
1. Employers are looking for solid functional skills
Katie Kross (educator, career coach, and author of Profession and Purpose: A Resource Guide for MBA Careers in Sustainability) mentioned that sustainability comes as an "icing on top" of your skill set. It is a plus if you have work experience and can tell your personal career story to your potential employer and let your passions shine through.
2. Focus on building long-term relationships
Networking and informational interviews are still number one way to land a sustainability job. Oftentimes employers do not even post the jobs, they fill positions through their networks. Focus on building long-term relationships and regularly following-up. Do not give up if your request for an informational interview has been rejected. Forty percent of sustainability professionals give you a chance - use it wisely and have fun with it; nothing attracts more that sincere interest!
3. Sustainability is applicable to any industry
Utilize your industry experience (what you learned from it) and consider changing employer type, job function or industry itself.
4. Leverage opportunities to build your experience
Employers look at your volunteer experience, as a credible step in your career, diversity of experiences is an attractive trait.
5. Stay current on industry and sustainability news
Things are changing faster and faster. Stay on top of the trends by following blogs and industry news. Become a specialist!
Best of luck on your job search,
